My first encounter Tourism Andaman

Andaman Tour

It was veritably big and hard to forget about. It was my maiden chance to see undiscovered “Andaman Islands ‘- Its stunning beaches, virgin forests and ancient ruins. Andaman is a charming place where beauty never fails to impress visitors’ hearts, so how could betray us, and also we were lucky enough not to meet something unexpected.

Andaman Tour

To give pause to our extremely busy schedule, at least we thought it was, even though we both had nothing officially to do instead of preparing our semester exams, which also was far away, we decided to go on an Andaman trip to see what exactly the island has to offer fun-lovers like us. Sunny, my friend and my trip mate on this trip, were / are more into partying and fun, while I am a kind of person who is determined to get off the beaten track and love to live amidst nature values and explore what we could inherited from the past.

We had a limited budget, but we wanted to discover the maximum possible. That’s why I hang over the Internet to design our tour itinerary in such a way that could cost us as little as possible, and give us maximum enjoyment. I worked out what places we would definitely see where we would stay and how we would get around the island. Flight booking was not a hassle as we made it through a travel agent.

On the appointed date, we landed on Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair. Let me tell you that direct flights from Delhi to Port Blair are not so many, and the timing is not so very great. So it is better to first fly to Kolkata and then to Port Blair same as we did. Minutes after setting foot off the flight, we were greeted by a seductive integration of natural shine, artificial creations and historical monuments in the capital. Even at the first sight, I had understood that it is the shy beauties of this wonderful archipelago that draws tourists from around the world.

Visit at Gandhi Park was the beginning of our trip. The park was simply awesome filled with eye-catching green, huge historical significance and a variety of water sports to enjoy. After we chose Cellular Jail to date with. When the most terrible name among Indian people, the structure is now a revered shrine dedicated to Indian freedom fighters. We saw the light and sound show, martyr memorial and a museum inside the prison. Experience with diving in Havelock Island was beyond my imagination. Looks fascinating marine life and stunning coral reefs was really a rare feeling mixed with adventure and enjoyment.

The rich history and the beautiful coastline on the Andaman has always been luring travelers. But it is inevitably excluded to avoid Andaman wild side. Home to a number of tribal reserves, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, Andaman is a fine place for nature lovers. We visited the bird sanctuary Chiriyatapoo during our Andaman tour. Apart from this, we visited the Forest Museum, Science Center and Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park also. Food and cultural bounties on Andaman is simply out of words and forest camping is also a not-to-miss activity. Hungry Bags is a leading tour agency offers Andaman Tour packages to make Andaman trip memorable and hassle free.

Trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands

My trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands with my school to November was a fruitful and an eye opening experience.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of islands found at the junction between the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. They form a Union territory of India and their southern fur is only 150 km above Indonesia. I visited the islands for my IB Group 4 or “science” trip inorder to learn about the local community and conduct experiments related to biodiversity.

Andaman Bluebay Holidays

I leaned to the islands are home to over 1,380 species of fish and surrounded by pristine coral. The islands are also a breeding ground for the critically endangered mammals in Dugong the islands mascot. Andaman Islands are also a paradise for birds. Over 206 species of birds are found on the islands, of which a staggering 106 are endemic. . The Naracondum Hornbill is one of those birds found on the extinct volcano island Naracondum. The islands also have Saltwater Crocodiles living in Andaman vast area of mangroves. The islands are blessed with a unique tropical rainforest canopy consisting of Indian, Myanmarese, Malaysian flower stems. Of the 2,200 varieties of plants Fund in Andaman and Nicobar 200 are endemic and 1300 did not happen on the Indian mainland. But it was not that, due to coral bleaching we were able to spot numerous species of crabs and marsupials like hermit crabs and scorpions. We also observed snakes, sea slugs, tadpoles and starfish. The snorkeling trip also provided us with a first hand experience of observing fish in their natural habitat; Unfortunately coral was bleached also.

On the fourth day of our trip we were privileged enough to learn about the tribal society of Andaman and Nicobar islands. A session was held at the residence Nicobarese tribe only physician. The flat where he lived was part of a resettlement plan made by the government after his native island; Car Nicobar was washed away in the tsunami in 2004. We were received warmly; this experience broke my longstanding prejudices against tribals, for I had always seen them as rash and impulsive. Before our interaction began, a tribal song performed for us. The song was about homeland and culture Nicobarese. After the song, the doctor talked about the geography of the island. He said the composition of the religions of the islands, the illiterate, etc. We learned that society is dominated by Christians (98%), while Muslims are also present in a small proportion. The current rate of literacy told us was about 90%, far above the Indian nation average of 71%. After a brief question and answer session where our knowledge of the community were improved, the men and women who performed the dance. The dances were symbolic of how society was closely knit. The discussion that continued was one of the most eye-opening discussions that I’ve ever had. We learned tribe had reached a stage where they could be compared with any developed country’s inhabitants. People were fully aware of tubectomy and actual procedure was performed often. They had a high standard of living and was an open society. The tribe had progressive outlook in almost all areas from marriage to their governance. Overall this talk was a very humbling and enlightening experience that had an impact far beyond my expectations. I learned to appreciate my roots and think of all the right light, most importantly, I learned not to be harmed. The discussion ended when the doctor told us about his sad and unfortunate experience in Delhi and hostility he stood with his family.

On the fifth day of our trip we had the opportunity to visit the local market in Neil Island for an interactive Q & A survey with local merchants. We were put in groups and could roam around the market are visiting stores to ask questions. We visited electrical shops, grocery stores, small restaurants etc.

The first store my group visited was a general electronics store. The shop was rented from a government establishment; hence the rent paid to the government. The electronics ranging from televisions and washing machines for smaller radio players. We were told that the products had to be imported from Bengal and thus obviously a tariff would be imposed. I asked the shopkeeper how goods were transported on the island, to which he replied by saying that he had to hire ferries to bring goods from the mainland to Neil Island.

Another stimulating part of the day was the visit to the daily needs shop. The merchant had a small store that was stuffed the items. He looked after the store with his wife. The shop belonged to his uncle who had given it to him to run the business and even stayed in Port Blair. The first question we asked him was the price he sold products like Coca Cola. He said Rs. 25, which was very surprising in the sense that the same bottle of Coke would be available on most of the other shops on the island of Rs. 40 it would be available at Rs. 30 on the mainland. It was commonly available for Rs. 40 because of the levies, however, Rs. 25 came as a shock when it was lower than the overall Rs. 30 as well.

Through these discussions I learned that maximize profit is not so important for the merchants. I realized how different life in Andaman and Nicobar Islands from the rest of India mainland, where material wealth has become the ultimate pursuit of life. These islands home to the world’s oldest surviving tribes is an example not only for India but also for the rest of the world. They have urbanized without releasing their roots and culture, which is a great achievement in a world where urbanization means Westernization, something not true.

My freedom to live

My freedom to live: ‘A free life is one lived with dignity’ Editor of The Andaman Chronicle; activist and spokesman for the Jarawa tribe in the Andaman islands, Port Blair-based Denis Giles, 40, is currently campaigning against the public use of portions of the Andaman Trunk Road that cut through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve, attempting to put an end to human safaris. The Great Andamanese are one among the four aboriginal peoples of the Great Andaman archipelago. Today, they are just 50 in number. In Port Blair, you often spot them at taxi stands or at traffic signals, begging for survival. “Why do you go to see Jarawas, I’m a Jarawa,” they tell curious tourists. Give them a ten-rupee note and they’ll get themselves a drink with the money.
14030902_1034149376706368_1256829336_n
Most of them are clueless about mainland India, never mind the world. The government provides them everything-education, jobs, healthcare, rations but this still barely helps them survive. The problem is they have lost their identity and, most importantly, self-esteem. Once that happens, there’s no point living in this world. To live a free life, you have to be able to live with dignity. Boa Senior, who passed away in 2010, was the last surviving member of the community who spoke their traditional language, Bo. In spite of the example of this great loss for the Great Andamanese, little is being done to help the other tribes. I’m not an expert, but I have been campaigning for the Jarawas since 2002, when I first joined the Society for Andaman and Nicobar Ecology. Over the years I’ve realised that if one supports their cause, one must respect and consider them to be fellow human beings. To begin with, why not call them by their true name, ‘Ang’? Jarawa is a term the British adopted from the Great Andamanese; it means outsiders in their language. After decades of Independence, we haven’t even given them back their name. There are about 420 remaining from the tribe who live in the Jarawa Tribal Reserve. For over 60,000 years they have lived off the land, never taking more than they needed. In contrast, the so-called ‘civilised’ lot has taken just 60 years to ruin the parts of the island they occupy. The Jarawas have their own medicinal system, rituals and seasons. They believe in spirits and respect their elders. There’s no rape among the tribes, even though they move around ‘naked’. So who’s the civilised lot here? In 2004, the first official Jarawa policy was put in place, which forbade interaction and put an end to ideas of bringing Jarawas into the mainstream. But again, who are we to have this isolation versus mainstream debate?

Andaman & Nicobar – The success story of mini India

What is your idea and vision for Andaman & Nicobar (A&N) Islands? What is its significance to the nation?
A&N Islands are an important part of India, notwithstanding the fact that they are 1200 kilometers away. The territory has a historically significant connection that dates back many centuries. Also, it is intrinsically rooted in our freedom struggle. In fact, I would say the soul of our freedom struggle rests in these Islands. The Islands also have immense strategic value. They straddle the maritime gateway to the Bay of Bengal and the world’s busiest shipping lanes pass just to the south of us. Due to the uniqueness of our location, India can play an important role in both the Bay of Bengal and Indo-Pacific transit. Recognising this, the nation has located the first tri-service operational command in these Islands.

Is it correct to say that the Islands, rather than solely being a Strategic Outpost, can also be viewed to provide economic engagement with South-East Asia? Also is this something which is in sync with the views of the Central government?

Yes, there is a difference in India’s position today. With these Islands at its base, India can be both a net security provider in the region as well as act as a catalyst for economic engagement with South-East Asia and beyond. I think the time has come, where we have to also explore the economic advantages that A&N Islands offer us. And I am happy to state that this fact is now being appreciated by the Central government too.
In today’s globalised economy, national security is an outcome not just of the creation of military assets but is also dependent upon economic dynamism. The location of these Islands also enables India to play an important role in the region, to extend assistance to our neighbourhood in a natural crisis such as the earthquake-cum-tsunami of 2004, as also deal with maritime security threats such as piracy and terrorism. I would say that the Islands are well poised to be the maritime fulcrum of our Hon’ble Prime Minister’s “Look East–Act East” policy.
Far from mainland India, the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands depends completely on the Central government for its developments. So what are the challenges faced by the administration?
A&N Islands are 1200 km far from the mainland, spread across 750 kms in the Bay of Bengal. The Islands have about one-fourth of the country’s coastline and 30 percent exclusive economic zone. We are a Union Territory – administered by the Central government and are dependent on them. We have been allocated approximately Rs 4000 crores from this year’s budget while revenue generation is only Rs 400 crores. Despite numerous challenges we have to optimise this allocation for the betterment of the Islands, fulfilling the aspirations of our people, improving security, protecting the environment and taking care of our tribes.
A committee has also been appointed under the Chief Secretary which will focus on how to improve our revenue generation capabilities. Despite many competing requirements, the Central government has sanctioned many big projects worth thousands of crores viz construction of 2 major bridges, widening of Andaman Trunk Road while approval for the undersea cable has been accorded in principle which will lead to a major transformation. New ships have been ordered under the Prime Minister’s “Make in India” scheme, a Medical College has commenced in one year which is another landmark achievement. We thank Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for his vision, guidance and support in this regard, which has enabled this progress.
The Islands have witnessed commendable growth after the BJP-led NDA government took office. What are the highlights of the A&N Administration’s achievements?
After I assumed charge, my thrust has been to bring in sustainable development and fulfill the needs and aspirations of the Islanders. During the last two years, a lot of positive changes have occurred under the dynamic leadership of our Prime Minister and the guidance and support of various Central government Ministries. The development that has taken place in the Islands during the past two years has overcome the backlog of many decades. Here are some major achievements:
Communications and Connectivity

Under Sea Cable:
Sanction for Under Sea Cable by Govt. of India has been granted from Chennai to Port Blair and 5 other Islands. This will help transform the Islands and open up many economic possibilities especially in the IT and BPO services.
Shipping:

*Sanction of two large ships (1500 pax) and two small ships (500 pax) by Central Government under “Make in India” concept.
*Agreement signed for 10 new harbour crafts.
Aviation:
 * flight service started to remotest District of the Country Nicobar. Charter flights for Chennai, Kolkata, and Vishakhapatnam at concessional rates for Islanders.
* Extension of runway projects in Diglipur and Campbell Bay followed by the commencement of Inter Island flights.
* Night flights have also started after augmenting the existing night landing technology. We hope to commence International flights soon.
Health:

ANIMERS: – The only Govt. Medical College commenced in one year, a very significant achievement. The influx of specialist doctors has made a great difference in health services. 85 students from the Islands get admission per year. Proposal for paramedical, nursing, and post graduate institute are also in progress, as is specialised care in cancer and heart treatment.
Health Insurance Scheme (ANISHI): ANISHI has been a great success where Islanders can get cashless treatment in specified hospitals in the mainland, up to Rs 5 lakhs.
All retired Govt. employees and the weaker section with an annual income up to Rs 3 lakhs are covered.  This is a path-breaking medical insurance scheme, the first of its kind in the country.
 Education:
 ANCOL:
Andaman College was opened to accommodate students who could not get admission in the only college in Port Blair.
Community College: Community College was opened for part time skill developments courses.
Law College: Sanction of Law College is under progress with Punjab University. A multidisciplinary Professional College is also to commence this year.
Infrastructure;

Roads: Widening of Andaman Trunk Road (ATR) is in progress.
Bridges: Sanction granted by Govt of India (GoI) for the building of two major bridges across straits, where presently ferry services are operating.
Employment – Apart from releasing many vacancies in government jobs, we have tried to encourage the spirit of free enterprise through self-help groups and Central government schemes like “Mudra Yojana”.
Agriculture and Fisheries – This sector has also received due attention. We are focussing on creating organic “Brand Andaman”.
Green Islands – This is the vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister, where we are replacing diesel generated power through solar energy and other niche technologies, thus making the Islands “Green”.
Centrally Sponsored Schemes – All schemes of the Prime Minister have been enthusiastically welcomed and implemented.
How do you promote sustainable tourism in a unique and eco-friendly manner keeping in view the fragile ecology and indigenous tribes?
There are two key areas that are crucial for the future growth of these Islands. One is tourism and the second is fisheries. Tourist inflows are increasing steadily and we are focusing on creating a unique brand of sustainable eco-friendly tourism. It will be aligned to ecology, nature, sea and water sports. As you land at Port Blair, you can see the bottom of the ocean, so clear are the waters. Our tourism will offer opportunities for all, not just high-end tourism but also middle level because that is what gives employment to our people.
We will develop our infrastructure further so that the place is not overwhelmed. We need a little more capacity and also to spread tourism throughout the year. The new sound and light show at Ross Island is one of the best in the country. A botanical garden is on the anvil. We have issued our interest for cruise ships. Safety aspects have been reinforced and new islands are being opened up. So a whole lot of things are happening, slowly but surely!
What roadmap have you drawn for taking the Islands forward? How do you see the Central government helping the A&N Administration in translating this dream into reality?
While focusing on today’s developments, we should not forget about the future. The Administration had appointed a study group to detail a 15-year Perspective Plan: Andaman – 2030. The study has since been completed and a follow-up action plan is being drawn up. Many areas hold great promise for the future and we are focusing on them.
Let me be quite candid in stating that the great progress made in the last two years is due to the support and guidance provided under the leadership and vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modiji: “Sabka Saath–Sabka Vikas”. We remain committed to achieving it in letter and spirit.
